Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby

Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).

If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

See the thorough online Japan Guide.

do we leave the secure area?

If the weather is bad that day and we don't leave the airport, do we have to leave the secure area to go to shopping and restaurants on the 4th floor? We come into and leave from T2. In looking at the Narita Airport website it appears the interesting stores and restaurants are on the 4th floor of T2 before security. So for a connecting flight, do we leave the plane, go through immigration, go back in to the airport, go shopping and eat, and go back through immigration and security?

There are some airside restaurants and shops at T2. The sushi place near gate 40-something is pretty good. You can also get free soba noodles at the ANA lounge if you have access to the lounge (Star alliance gold or Biz class etc.).

If you want to go to the landside restaurants you would need to clear immigration. I

Edited -- In a seven hour layover, it would make for a change of scenery.
For a short layover it's not worth it IMHO.

Not worth the trouble, IMHO.

Greetings all... I've got a trip taking me through NRT in the coming weeks. I'll have close to a 12-hour layover (7am-7pm) and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about places to visit/eat in Tokyo for the day. I was planning on taking the slower train back and forth from the city, and getting back to the airport around 5pm -- which I'm assuming will give me about 9am-4pm in the city.

Many thanks.

A couple points:

(1) Don't take the slow train from NRT to Tokyo on a weekday morning. It's a commuter train and you'll be in the middle of rush hour packed like a sardine. This should not be your introduction to Tokyo unless you're a total masochist. Take the NEX or the Skyliner, whichever departs first.

(2) http://wikitravel.org/en/Classic_Tokyo%2C_Modern_Tokyo has good ideas for a layover. You'll probably have to omit one or two of the portions in the interest of saving time, though.

Long layover - lockers for luggage at NRT?

I have a long layover at NRT. Are there lockers or a place I can keep my luggage at NRT while I go sightseeing?

Found the answer.. http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/guid...st/svc_07.html

Are these lockers big enough to store a 22" carryon bag?

If you searched this forum and found this thread you will have found that there are also staffed left luggage facilities as well at NRT.

Newbie, thank you. I did find older threads but with security procedures changing very often wanted to make sure these facilities are still available.

If you're worried that the information postedon that thread in July 2008 is no longer current, I suggest you check the airport web site. (Hint: There's a link to it in the thread that Newbie kindly recommended to you).

Layover at Narita Japan...

My flight will be layover at Narita Japan. Staying at the hotel. If I go out of the hotel for purchasing a Japanese souvenir at local store in Narita, my question is: do I have to pay a sales tax on each souvenir that I buy there?
How can I let the store employee to "opt-out" me from paying a sales tax?
Is there anyone know about the "sales tax" law in Narita for foreigners?

I think this should be posted in other forum. But anyways, you have to pay 5% sales tax unless you shop at the duty free stores at the departure lobby. Some stores (usually department stores) offer tax return if you purchase more than 10500 yen worth of products.

layover at Narita International airport...

Arrival flight at Narita International Airport at 2pm, on February 2009.Check in at the hotel nearby hotel(paid by airplane) at 3:30PM. So I will be free from 3:30PM to 10am the following day, departure flight 11:20am to Jakarta Indonesia.
This is my plan. I wud like to visit Narita city tourist pavilion using Narita Express (fee 1,430Yen/one way-during low season period).
It will take 90 minutes from Narita International Airport to Narita city.
After visiting Narita tourist pavilion, I continue walking to Omotesando, and after that stop by the shinshoji temple for some pictures.
After visiting Narita city, I have to go back to Narita station. My question is do have to pay the JR fee to enter the Narita station? in order to continue my trip to Tokyo station?
I do no know how the JR line fee works???
Help ...

You don't take the Narita Express to reach the city of Narita. You take a local Keisei train, for about Ą250. The trip is no more than 15 minutes. You don't have time to go to Tokyo, but that's all right. There's plenty to do in Narita for the short time that you have. In particular, 10AM may be too late to check in for an 11:20 flight, especially if a lot of flights are leaving at that time.

Trip to Narita City 250Yen???

To: Ksandness
Thanks for yr reply to my question. Can you explain to me more detail about a local Keisei Line? Can I buy the ticket from Narita International Airport Terminal 2- booth not a ticket vending machine?
Should I buy a single ticket or round trip ticket?
