Japanese LCC - hand baggage checks?
 

Hello All,

how strictly do Japanese LCCs check the weight of hand baggage? I am specifically interested in intra-Japan flights on AirAsia and on Peach.

If I appear at the airport with a cabin trolley that weighs 10kg instead of the allowed 7kg:

• How likely am I to get caught?
• What are the consequences/cost of getting caught?

Japan domestic is not so strict (int'l may be different, especially if its a non-Japan based LCC), but any weight check is not done at security, so 3 or 4 kg could easily be put in one's pockets, under the armpits, wrapped around the waist like a coat (with things also stuffed in those pockets) or just shoved into your waist.
On multiple occasions around the planet I've carried well over 10kg on my person separate from any carry-on.

Or wear the excess weight as earrings. Guaranteed to make your ears hang low.

AirAsia Japan hasn't existed for some time so no chance of getting caught there.

Not sure about Peach, Jetstar do weigh at check-in and at the gate and will charge you about 5,500 JPY if over... but they also let you upgrade to 14kg carry-on for a fee of about 2,000 JPY by memory.

Peach will also weigh at check in and strictly adhere to the baggage limit. Peach's carry on limit is stated as "Up to 7 kg for 2 items" and I don't think you can upgrade. Checked baggage is however quite reasonably priced for domestic flights.

Agree. I always just check in on domestic LCCs, it's so cheap and saves the trouble. I find the bag is almost always waiting for me by the time I get off.
