For a start, check out Google flights.

Avoid school holidays, be open minded about routing (the cheapest direct flights are twice the price of the cheapest indirect flights), pounce on a good deal as soon as you see it. Saying that, if you are prepared for some inconvenience it is occasionally possible to get deals when the kids break up from school (for instance I got Easter flights to Nagoya from Stockholm, neither ARN nor NGO are at all convenient for us but we’re making them work and saving hundreds of Euros)

There are plenty of flights to KIX (Osaka) from AMS between November 2024 and March 2025 in the €520-€600 range. Absolute cheapest flights I’ve seen are €400 return but they depart from Budapest, Hungary. €500-€600 is about as good as it gets for a complete return trip from AMS. As mentioned already, you’ll find them on Google flights.

Couple of things to watch with the KLM flights via AMS:
  • the cheapest fares shown usually book into the economy light fare bucket which is hand baggage only. The other fare types can be selected when booking.
  • Some of the cheaper fares involve an overnight at AMS at your own expense.
Savings can also be had on KLM where there is an extra sector via CDG so instead of XXX-AMS-KIX you route XXX-AMS-CDG-KIX.

OP is Dutch, I’d assumed they would start from AMS, not route through AMS.

Hadn’t noticed that.

Thanks for the tips so far.
Does it make sense to use a VNP when booking?
E.g. “Spain” to search flights from AMS to Japan?

There is a thread on the China destination forum about CTrip which is effectively trip.com with discussion about how the user’s country setting occasionally affects some of the pricing. My own answer to your question is; unlikely but possible. I cannot think of one example though.

The way to make using “Spain” to save money for a trip with KLM to Japan is to start your journey and physically begin your trip from Spain.
On this theoretical trip, for the return journey, so long as you can avoid your luggage being sent through to Spain (a ticket requiring an overnight layover in AMS would make it easy) you can ditch the last segment and terminate your journey prematurely.

I don’t use VPNs myself, my husband got one because he had to stay in China for an extended business stay and trying to then unsubscribe became a prolonged and deeply unwelcome irritation.

Searching AMS - TYO on Google Flights on my phone - UK based, China Eastern via Shanghai comes in at around £550 for various dates in November and start of December, travelling midweek.

China Southern can be had for £426 on same dates via Beijing but with long overnight layovers in Beijing each way.

Prices January to March are between £550 and £800.

I found it was cheaper to select KIX rather than TYO.

Google Flights is your best friend. Echoing another user, though, the "economy" price listed in the search may include Basic Economy seats, which you probably don't want.

Zipair is an LCC subsidiary of JAL that does not yet serve Europe. Peach, ANA's LCC, only flies domestic and intra-Asia routes.

Am currently seeing flights from BRU to HND departing 7th Apr and returning 27th Apr for €780 (£655). This is with Thai. Involves one 7.5hour and one 9.5hour stopover at BKK - a great place to hang out.
