Return Visit to Tokyo
 

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice on our upcoming trip to Tokyo. We are landing in Haneda and spending 4 nights in Shinjuku before moving on to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. Our return flight is from Haneda so the plan is to come back to the Tokyo area for the final 2 nights. Struggling to decide where to base ourselves for the final 2 days. I was looking at a few nice hotels in Yokohama but it doesn't really seem like there is plenty to do there. Thinking the best plan might be to base ourselves somewhere on the east/south side of the city (maybe around Shinagawa) to make it easiest to get to Haneda in the morning (9.45am departure). Would appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

If you were simply overnighting in Tokyo before an early flight out of HND, I think Shinagawa is fine, but it's a bit dull for two days IMO. As an alternative, I suggest somewhere close to an Asakusa Line station like Shimbashi, Higashi Ginza, Nihonbashi, or even Asakusa, which are walkable neighbourhoods that I prefer to Shinagawa. YMMV:

You can get an airport train from the Asakusa line platforms. (But beware, not all trains on the line go to HND, so make sure you get an airport train).

I do not consider Yokohama not to have plenty of things to do. When I lived in Tokyo I made numerous weekend day trips to Yokohama. I think it all depends on what are you looking to do during the last two days of the trip. If you can provide specifics of things you are looking to do on the final two days of the trip, I think people can provide a lot more appropriate advice.

Yokohama is not particularly bad access to Haneda Airport if you stay near JR Yokohama station. Yokohama City Air Terminal, located immediately east of JR Yokohama station by the Sogo department store, the bus runs every 30 min. to Haneda Terminal 3 (international terminal) and every 15 min. to Haneda Terminal 1 and 2 (domestic terminal). The bus has underbelly luggage space, 39 min. ride to Terminal 3 with a 650 yen fare. There is a bus from Yamashita Park/Minato Mirai area (bay/port area of Yokohama) to Haneda Airport every 30 min.

I enjoyed my stay at the Hilton Yokohama in Dec 2023 ( 1 night and 2 days)
I enjoyed the walk along the waterfront and the osanbashi pier ( with beautiful views of the city at night). After a number of visits to Tokyo , this was my first visit to Yokohama and feel it would be good for a few days to visit ( esp with a trip to Kamakura for example). The winter/Christmas decorations and trees in the shopping malls were very good
The Sankeien garden ( a few minutes by train then bus/taxi or walk) is beautiful
Kamakura is also close by ( lots of temples)

You could stop at Hakone for one night and then head to Shinagawa for the lazt night.
There certainlty is enough in Yokohama for your one full day. You could visit Hakone on the way to Yokohama or day trip. Or Yokohama and Kamakura.

I do not consider Yokohama to be boring at all. :)
Select a hotel near the main train station.
There is an underground arcade leading northwest from the station which is explorable.
If you go out the North West exit, cross the river, and continue north on that avenue; you will reach a traffic signalled intersection which seemingly is the end of the avenue, but which is not. Go the one block north and find yourself at the Thrash Zone bar. It has limited hours, but features hard rock | metal music on audio and video, and some of the lowest beer prices. (You order a beer via a kiosk.)
If you decide you do want to visit Tokyo, both the Keikyu and Tokyu train lines have an open ticket which provide a round trip from Yokohama to each's first station in Tokyo [Sengakuji or Naka-Meguro] and unlimited rides on one of the two Tokyo subway systems [Toei or Tokyo Metro].

I want to second Yokohoma as well. It’s very relaxed compared to Tokyo, has a area called Noge that’s full of rock/jazz bars, nice selection of affordable hotels, and you can embark on a day trip to Kanagawa and Enoshima during this time too. There are some beaches up and down the coast as well.

You will be able to do everything at a relaxed pace while being an hour train ride away from Haneda.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've ended up booking near Tokyo station, figure it will mean less travelling once we are off the train and it makes it handy to do a day trip to Yokohama then as well.
