7 Hour HND/NRT layover - What to do?
My friend is arriving at HND at 13:50 - leaving the same day from NRT at 20:50. She's never been to Japan. Is there sufficient time to see/do anything before heading to NRT?
Unfortunately - The flights were booked for her and can't be changed. |
The simplest thing for a first time visitor with some luggage, might be to take a Limousine Bus to NRT, check in luggage for the onward flight, and then take a local Keisei line train to Narita City to wander around for an hour or two.
Your friend might make it onto the bus that departs from HND T3 at 2:40 PM - arriving at NRT around 4:15 PM https://www.airport-bus-alliance.com...lang=en&frto=1 Narita City is just a small town - but there's enough to distract a visitor for a few hours and you can get a decent meal near the station. https://www.japan.travel/en/destinat...ta-and-around/ |

Many thanks - That was what I was thinking as well. I understand there used to be short tours offered at NRT but not at the moment.
If not, may want to grab a snack and drink (eg onigiri) at HND before boarding the bus (which is scheduled for 75 min). Could be from convenience store or the restaurants at HND |

https://www.tokyo-monorail.co.jp/english/ Then go back to HND to take bus to NRT. Or take everything to a NEX stop and leave bags at that station to avoid going back to HND. |

Narita Town is extremely easy to navigate. When I built an itinerary for my parents I included a short stay here for their final night so that they could amble around the town and temple before they boarded their flight back to Europe. It holds its own against many other neighbourhoods and destinations in Japan. |
I've mentioned it on other threads, but usually I would go to NRT asap to check bags, put carryon in the lockers, then take the Keisei to Narita city.
If I have time and the bus schedule lines up with the flights, I'd take the bus from Keisei Narita station to the Aeon Mall Narita to grab food and browse the shops there was well. |
Great info. The only issue I see is Naritasan is quiet after 4PM (temple closed I think) so it might not be a great "taste of Japan"?

Pretty sure it's open all the time. Maybe the store selling charms closes but the grounds are open.

https://soranoyu.com/en/access#shuttlebus As someone else suggested above, it's also possible for your friend to visit central Tokyo. For example, they could take the monorail, then the Yamanote line to Ueno. Walk to Keisei Ueno station to put luggage in a locker and purchase a Skyliner ticket to NRT. Then wander around Ameyoko or Ueno Park. This is doable but it involves hauling luggage around some busy stations, which might be more stressful for a first time visitor. Is it a better "taste of Japan" than a visit to Narita? I think that's down to personal preference. One thing that you might want to check is the operating hours of check in for your friend's onward flight. |

I checked my luggage for a JAL night flight after 7AM last week.
