GodAtum As you are due to head off tomorrow, enjoy your trip to Japan and don't stress it if you don't get to see or do everything you were planning to - that's what future visits are for. ;)
|
Congratulations to GodAtum Would have been hot as heck and extremely tiring but Friday, 24th was a perfect day with regards to clarity for glorious Fuji San views at Kawaguchiko. I hope the Saturday rest day mends some of the exhaustion.

Congratulations, you finally figured out how to spend time and “be” in your very own interpretation of Japan.
I have appreciated the review and can see how it made an enjoyable holiday destination. |
Excellent trip report (and trip, it seems). Clearly very busy, but seems you were flexible and went with the flow (figuratively, and sometimes literally, as in the Hiroshima Peace Museum), and ended up with plenty of room service, down time, and unplanned diversions, as it should be.

As my trip gets closer, I wanted to follow up on my earlier posts in the thread so get some suggestions & feedback.
Our travel party consists of 4 people which includes my wife & 2 sons aged 12 & 10. It will be the first trip to Japan for all of us. Here is our itinerary so far: December 24th we arrive in HND at 6:30am. We are currently booked for 6 nights at the ibis Styles Tokyo Ginza. Since I would prefer to use Accor points for this trip, I also have the option of staying at either the Mercure Tokyo Hibiya or Pullman Tokyo Tamachi. I have been told the Ginza area is good for exploring the city. Any suggestions on the location would be appreciated. December 30th we leave for Kyoto. Based on the earlier suggestions, the Shinkansen is the way to go. Bookings don't seem to have opened up for December yet so as a back-up I have 4 award tickets booked on ANA from HND-ITM that I can cancel at any time. We stay in Kyoto for 5 nights & are currently booked at the ibis Styles Kyoto Shijo. Again, I have to option to shift to the Mercure Kyoto Station if that would be a better location. 4th January we take the train to Osaka. Here I have booked the ibis Osaka Umeda for 2 nights. The other option would be the Mercure Tokyu Stay Osaka Namba. Our flight back home is early in the morning on the 6th so the purpose of coming to Osaka would be so that we are closer to the airport. Thoughts & suggestions on the above? |
I would not personally stay in Ginza, the area is a bit bland for my taste. I would prefer a different area. Also I never book Western chains in Japan, this is a missed opportunity to book local hotels or a Japanese chain.
No need to have award tickets booked, you will find places on the Shinkansen even if you show up before departure to buy a ticket. |

Mercure is a higher grade hotel within walking distance to green space but less interesting commercial activity. The Tamachi location is the least interesting IMO. I wouldn't argue with "bland" as a description of that area.

Regarding your Kyoto hotel options - Mercure or Ibis styles locations both look not super-interesting but Ibis may be closer to the things that you want to visit. Regarding your stay in Osaka - Which airport are you leaving from? ITM or KIX? |

Not something I’d do myself (this is a time when I’d seek to stay put in Tokyo), but my understanding is that the shinkansen get terribly crowded near the 31st December. @Keyser I’ve looked back at your posts in this thread but since I can’t really pick up on anything that interests you there is nothing I can recognise and build on with suggestions. I’d personally pick Ginza over Shibuya, whether that preference is relevant to you I have NO idea. You have Accor points and Shimbashi is a good base station from which to explore, since you have 10 & 12 year olds with you, I’d recommend the Mercure over the ibis as it is that much closer to Shimbashi as well as Shiodome stations. |

The Ibis location is fine. It's a walkable area with a variety of restaurants and stores. Transport links are good.

Shinkansen is unbeatable for convenience. Flights are cheaper - especially since you have award reservations. (I assume to ITM?)

Using points to save on the cost of the hotel. This way we can use these funds on other aspects of the trip. Good to know. Flight tickets have already been booked & I can cancel them anytime before departure. I understand the idea, however since Accor points is a cashback essentially, using them on this trip or another you will get the same savings, just at a different time. Also western chains tend to be overpriced compared to japanese. The price for your Ibis, even with the discount due to the points, can be more expensive than a Dormy Inn which would also be a much more comfortable and nice hotel, with a better breakfast and an onsen. |
