Thanks that gives me a little better idea for packing as I am just taking carryon.
So is Kyoto warmer than Tokyo? |
What’s it typically like in mid to late April? I usually go in March.

By late April you start getting a preview of the warmth of May, but without too much of the humid “closeness” that sets in the next month making brisk walks and other ways of expending energy start to feel exhausting. If you go up further North, past Utsunomiya, mid April starts to feel like late March in Tokyo, snow is thawing in the Urabandai highlands, mountain shoots and vegetables are coming into season, the sakura is blooming. Late April can be wonderful. The skies will mostly be a uniform aluminium sheen pale grey but when the clouds clear the blue skies are glorious. All too easy to become sunburned, as fresh breezes can deceive you on the sun’s potency. Take lessons from the peony flowers which come into bloom in later April - they get shielded with umbrellas for good reason! Again, be prepared for cool mornings and evening even on a warm, balmy day, always take a warm layer out with you. If the forecast predicts a sunny 23C/74F expect it to feel like 26C/79F and also be prepared for a dip of 10C/17F the next day. In Tokyo at least, you shouldn’t have to worry about rogue snow or sleet as you would in March/very early April. Congratulations, it’s a great time to visit, particularly if there is a lot you want to actively do. |
Thanks for all of that! Was exactly the kind of detail I was hoping for.

Whilst the month can be very variable, I have found the marked dip in temperature at the beginning and end of each day to be very consistent. Be sure not to get caught out. And watch out for allergies if you are prone to them. |
Mid-May is one of my favorite times to go to Tokyo. Days are long, and weather will be mild to warm but not oppressively hot yet. Minimal risk of typhoon compared to the Fall.
If curious about weather I'd go to a weather website like Weather Underground and review average temps and actual forecasts for the past few years in the timeframe you want to visit. It will give a good idea of what to expect. |
Yes I have done that but sometimes experience gives better view
