Cherry blossoms already
 

Sakura season’s early - this is in Atami, quite a bit north of southern Izu where you’d expect these to be blooming in Feb

These are famous as very early flowering Sakura which typically reach full bloom between mid January and early February.

They are called Atamizakura.

Another area well known for early cherry blossoms is Kawazu on the east coast of Izu Peninsula. Current forecast is 20% blossom on 15 February and 70% on 21 February. Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival will take place throughout the month of February. Both Atami Zakura and Kawazu Zakura last longer than Somei Yoshino, for example.

Just two weeks until we arrive, hope we get some early blossom or the plum blossom is still around. Travelling Tokyo, Kyoto, Kanazawa and Tokyo 18th Feb-3rd March. Also hoping to see some snow although of course the two don't really mix.

The Cherry Blossoms at Kawazu already look very nice.

The pictures are from last Friday.
Getting to Kawazu from Tokyo is very easy.
- For example, the "Odoriko" trains take you directly to Kawazu in about 2.5 hours.
- For some departure times, you can make it faster by taking a Shinkansen to Atami and change there.
- If you have a JR pass, you'll need to pay an add-on for the leg from Ito to Kawazu and back. (No need to change the train. The fare difference can be paid to the conductor, or otherwise on arrival in Kawazu)
