Need help with two tickets booking transition in HND procedures
 

I have booked two tickets (BKK-HND; HND-IAD) from different award programs on the same day with checked bags. Can anyone shred the light on how the procedures to pickup checked bags, go through immigration and check-in with the HND-IAD flight? Thank you!

Unless you can enter Japan you will have to check the bags in at BKK all the way through to IAD -- you will not be able to recheck bags in HND. What are the airlines?

You cannot collect your bags in HND without a visa to enter the country. Hopefully both tickets are on the same or partner airlines.

BKK-HND is with JAL and HND-IAD is with ANA. They are booked thru different award programs.

No, unfortunately I have booked thru two different reward programs and with different airlines. I don't have Japan visitor's visa as well. It sounds like I'm very risky with these bookings. When do you think Japan is going to open to individual visitor? Thanks!

One other thing you should be aware of - there is a very real possibility that you will not be allowed to board your flight in BKK as from JAL’s perspective you are terminating there - not transiting - and without a visa they won’t let you board. If I were you I would call JAL and see if they will interline your bags to ANA - otherwise I would figure out how to rebook this itinerary as no one knows if Japan will reopen any time soon….

With checked luggage yes, it will likely be an issue. Without checked baggage it will work fine. People travel on separate tickets on separate airlines with no issues. As long as they don't try have checked luggage across alliances or across non partner airlines.

Thank you! It is good to know about this. If I don't have any checked bags, I will have no problem board the BKK-HND flight. Do I have to provide HND-IAD flight ticket when check-in at BKK?

Thank you! I Google that JAL and ANA is located in different terminals. I haven't been to HND before. Do you know change terminal in HND would be an issue or not?

If you can speak Japanese call JAL Japan -- otherwise NA is probably better.

Since you are transiting HND this is simpler (than NRT) -- when you check in for JAL in BKK (assuming they will manage the luggage) you will have to show them your reservation on ANA -- so have the itinerary with flight numbers printed out.

You should be able to check in online for ANA -- download the ANA app to your phone -- we use it all the time and it works well enough... If that doesn't work for you they do have transit desks at HND where you could get a boarding pass easily.

No one has an actual insight into that. But the point is probably more that travel within a couple of months are almost certainly doomed for entry in to Japan, whereas a bit further down the road it is probably more a wait and see situation.
