I am not understanding all of the negativity here. Who cares if it is "odd" if it is legal? MEX-NRT-USA is a legal transit no matter how odd. Nor is a transit required to be on a single PNR, why would a pandemic alter such a requirement? If you can show a ticket that transits you through NRT then it should be legal.
Sure, be prepared for whatever could go wrong, but you can't win if you don't play! As somebody that transits often on "odd" itineraries with multiple tickets and never has had any issue this just doesn't phase me. Yup, we are in a pandemic which means the airport staff likely has more free time to work with you. Worst case? Other than possibly catching Covid, you turn around at MEX, you got some flying under your belt and your wife is happy and feels cared for in that you did try. If OP is willing to run the chance of being stuck in MEX, this is all fine. |

I did not surface the term, "odd."

It is a very odd routing. But, the problem is that separate tickets MEX-NRT and NRT-EWR with a claim of "transit" is even odder. Bottom line is that "odd" isn't the standard, it is whether OP's ground time in Japan qualifies as a "transit." If it does not, he will be denied boarding at MEX however he is ticketed.

Hi all. Just wanted to update everyone about how things went if ever it could help you in the future. My trip to Mexico City was uneventful and the only problem is there was a long layover and the check-in counters for NH do not open until 3 hours before the flight. There are no seats available to sit on in the waiting area so I went to a Chili’s that is open 24 hours and ate and sat there until check-in opened. At check-in they did ask me some questions as the transit is an “odd” route, but when I explained why I was taking that route they were fine with it. They wanted to see my UA ticket and I showed them and they even checked me into that flight and printed by boarding pass. All in all was much smoother than I expected.
The plane might have had 10 passengers total, with 3 in business class. The attentive service with so few passengers was amazing and it seemed comparable to what I experienced before in first class. Upon landing in NRT they asked transit passengers to deplane first and they looked at my UA boarding pass at the exit and let me off the plane. Going to transit security was eerie as I did not see one other passenger. The same was true as I walked the airport I did not see one other passenger on my way to the NH lounge. I waited there about 7 hours for my wife to arrive and she was there right in time. We were so happy the plan worked and we went to our UA flight which was fairly empty and was uneventful but I found the service to be good for UA standards. In EWR the immigration area was so quiet and we were through the whole process in 10 minutes, which included the time in the back room where they processed her visa. I’m glad this worked since she had a lot of baggage and it was a struggle even for me to handle it. We are now home together and I wanted to thank everyone on this thread for the guidance provided. |

Outstanding. Glad to hear everything work out for you and your wife.

So there's a $250 same day turn fare UA has. I'm assuming UA will let me board DFW-ORD-NRT-EWR-DFW as long as I get the negative test for the US right?

you are doing roundtrip to japan(dfw-nrt), not transiting japan. Will get denied boarding at dfw due to failure to meet japan entry conditions (check timatic) If you can talk your way on the flight.... Or waste $250 (or change that to later in the year when hopefully japan opens up. Who knows?) |
Thanks for the reply. Almost wasted some credits.

Start or end in MEX and it will work. You can’t start from and return to the same country with a TYO connection. And you must be able to enter that other country.
technically timatic says the japan/south korea TWOV is for transit to a 3rd country, but I've never seen anyone get a visa for these routes pre-covid (just complaints about potential cabotage) most likely UA would make you reroute/rebook you via hawaii |

interesting edge case would be if CONUSA-TYO-Guam/Saipan is allowed (or CONUSA-ICN-Guam/Saipan). technically timatic says the japan/south korea TWOV is for transit to a 3rd country, but I've never seen anyone get a visa for these routes pre-covid (just complaints about potential cabotage)

I know that they haven’t been checking COVID tests from CONUS-NRT-GUM and vv on single itineraries, but has anyone done it on separate tickets but had their COVID tests checked? Thinking of doing NH to NRT and UA to GUM but on separate tickets.

Would you rather find out when you’re being denied boarding at the gate?
