Japan Plans To Pay Some Of Your [Domestic] Travel Expenses To Encourage You To Visit
It seems there are not a lot of details but depending on specifics this could be a very nice thing if the situation improves sufficiently to be safe. I would assume they would have some kind of maximum per traveler but any amount would be helpful to get things going.

Noooo. Clearly in the 'what the hell are they thinking' category.

They’d have to open up the borders first

Hi,
This appeared in the Evening Standard ( newspaper popular in London and SE england especially at Railway and underground stations) and I saw the headline https://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle...-a4450406.html 'Japan wants to pay for half of your flights if you visit this year' and my first impression was 'YES!!'. Then realised it sounded familar. ( ie this thread) To be fair the ES article at the bottom said it was unclear if it would apply to both domestic and international pax Regards TBS |
Clarified to be only a portion of expenses, not half.
Looking at the original Japanese, someone may have jumped the gun with a bad translation, which is how this got picked up. Page 5 of the summary of the supplementary budget states that the maximum amount that would get subsidized is 20,000 yen per person per stay, in the form of coupons that would offer up to half off of travel-related goods. My guess is that would be mainly for omiyage. |

The bigger caveat is that it's a subsidy for "domestic" travel expenses. i.e., foreign residents are not eligible.
