Increase of Nozomi frequency during peak time

Currently between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka portion of Shinkansen schedule is Nozomi 10 every hour, Hikari 2 every hour, and Kodama 3 every hour.

JR Tokai has announced that starting Spring of 2020 during Friday late afternoon and holiday period frequency of Nozomi will increase to 12 every hour. Hikari will remain 2 every hour and Kodama will remain 3 every hour.

Friday late afternoon and holiday periods are most busy time for Tokyo and Shin-Osaka portion of Shinkansen and frequently facing almost sold out situation according to JR Tokai. Current N200 series trains Shinkansen uses on Tokyo and Shin-Osaka has 1,323 seats. 10 Nozomi every hour means there are 13,230 seats available on Tokyo and Shin-Osaka every hour on Nozomi alone, if we include Hikari and Kodama there are 19,845 seats every hour. JR Tokai is saying that during late Friday afternoon and holiday period 13,230 seats every hour is not enough for Tokyo and Shin-Osaka?

Well, a lot of people do move between Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka every hour, don't they?

All I can say is WOW! Certainly reminds you what a really good high-speed rail system can do. Earlier this week, I took the Kodama for a mere 30 minutes between Odawara and Shinagawa, one of the slower portions of the run. Even that little bit of travel served to remind me of what a pleasure it is to travel on the shinkansen, something that rarely can be said of air travel regardless of class of service.

They just need to follow the airlines' example and cram in more seats. :-)

Given the extra demand for train travel over the national holiday next week, would one recommend purchasing tickets in advance for a Hiroshima -> Kyoto ride on Nozomi if we need to arrive in Kyoto at a specific time? If so, what is the best way to do this before departing the US?

Which day? Except for first and last days of the holiday, shinkansen shouldn't be excessively crowded.

If you need to reserve seats, use this app from JR Central and West: Smart-EX.

Look out around the start (Apr 27) and the end (May 6) of the holiday. Those will be peak travel days. May 4 ought to be nothing to worry about.
