Useful apps in Japan

I am leaving for Kansai area (Izumisano, Wakayama, Kyoto, Kobe, Himeji and Osaka for 12 days shortly and I wonder if anyone can list some apps that can help with planning and info, in particular:
- Weather
- Restaurant
- Transport
- Tourism destinations/spots
Is Google translate/Microsoft Translate sufficient to communicate with Japanese people?
Also, my friend ask me to buy some DVDs from Nobunaga Bookshop. But I can't find an e-store. Can I ask is there going to be book/DVD search machines inside the bookstore?
Many Thanks.

hyperdia.com is the standard for transport info. It's available in English.

I haven't shopped at Nobunaga but for regular music or bookstores, I'll take a printed list of the titles and authors/artists in both English and Japanese I'm looking for and I've found the staff are usually happy to help me if I can't find it on my own. Or print out the first page of the title's Amazon.co.jp product page (or similar), although I'm not sure if it's something at Nobunaga that it will be on Amazon.

Japan Transit Planner (English version of 乘換案內 by Jorudan) , with platform information etc. Not as good as 乘換案內 but much more usable than hyperdia app. People who tried hyperdia app always complained and ended up using the browser.

Good point, when I recommended hyperdia, I meant the browser version -- don't use the mobile app
