New Year 2019

新年明けましておめでとう御ざいます。今年もよろしくお願いします。

Just like anybody else did 初詣, not at that big one such as 川崎大師 at Kawasaki or 新勝寺 at Narita, but local temple. Support local! Those big names are damn busy and packed with people anyway.

Did おみくじ and got「凶」。Seriously, they actually have「凶」during 初詣?

This is my year 2019 going to be.

Akemashite omedeto!

This is the first year in awhile that I missed the kouhaku utegassen. I know that makes me an old fogie but I AM an old fogie.

明けましておめでとう!

I doubt they replace / re-arrange all those omikuji papers and slots just for the New Year Day :P (Did anyone try to take a peek at the fortunes for the same number slot day after day? Now I am curious.)

I don't know more than half of performers on Kouhaku, that make me an old fogie...

Rumor has it that they do remove bad fortunes during big event such as New Years and summer festival. Yeah, big one such as 川崎大師 and 新勝寺 won't do it but small local one are desperate of getting more people. Having bad fortune will not make people come back again, people will think that temple is bad luck. It is not easy to be those small local temples these days...

New Year 2019 is still going on, Jan. 3 is not done yet. Top 10 shrine/temple for 初詣 (Hatsumoude, New Year visit to shrine/temple) for year 2018 (number of visitors between Dec. 31, 2017 and Jan. 3, 2018) were:

1. Meiji Jingu (Tokyo prefecture), approximately 3,160,000 visitors over three days
2. Kawasaki Daishi (Kanagawa prefecture), approximately 3,020,000 visitors over three days
3. Naritasan Shinshoji (Chiba prefecture), approximately 3,000,000 visitors over three days
4. Sensoji (surprisingly no official English website. Tokyo prefecture, Asakusa), approximately 2,830,000 visitors over three days
5. Fushimi Inari Taisha (Kyoto prefecture), approximately 2,700,000 visitors over three days
6. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (Kanagawa prefecture, Kamakura), approximately 2,500,000 visitors over three days
7. Sumiyoshi Taisha (Osaka prefecture), approximately 2,360,000 visitors over three days
8. Atsuta Jingu (Aichi prefecture, Nagoya), approximately 2,300,000 visitors over three days
9. Hikawa Jinjya (no official English website. Saitama prefecture), approximately 2,150,000 visitors over three days
10. Dazaifu Tenmangu (Fukuoka prefecture), approximately 2,000,000 visitors over three days

Little surprised that Ise Jingu (Mie prefecture) and Izumo Oyashiro (no official English website. Shimane prefecture) but could be due to the location.

Any of above will be packed with people during New Year. Better off going to local small shrine/temple.
