At Kyoto now and there are only a few blooms.
most trees are still bare.

the weather is quite cold here so maybe that is why the flowers arent blooming yet.
Kyoto seems to be an amazing city for cherry blossoms as there seems to be plenty of cherry blossom trees located in very scenic areas.

When is it the best of the best? 4/2 or 4/10 or somewhere in-between?

Near impossible to say. The blooming of the flowers will depend on when the trees respond to a sequence of warm days - not just a single instance of warmth. (The article below calls this a temperature sum). And the longevity of those blossoms will depend on whether the wind and elements leave the blooms on the trees.

Having been looking closely at Tokyo and Kyoto this year and seeing the weather’s influence, particularly on how a few colder days slowed progress in Kyoto, I’m raising my hopes a little for Sendai.
We’ll be there around the 14th April.
The Sendai predictions had been sliding towards earlier and earlier in the month. MrLapLap missed the past few seasons, I’m crossing my fingers for the whole family to enjoy it this time around.

Thanks for the updates everyone, and esp. the links to live cameras and for the posted photo. Will be arriving in Tokyo in a few days and looking forward to seeing the cherry blossoms!

Blossoms started on 3/27 for Kyoto. Expected prime viewing is 4/3 - 4/11.

Prime viewing in Kyoto has been moved to April 4 to 12 BUT we're leaving Kyoto on April 3rd

Any recommend day-trip destination reachable from Kyoto where the blossoms will be fuller on April 2-3 ?

From Kyoto, I'd think Himeji or even Hiroshima would be earlier.
