OTC pain relievers are tricky. I have bad knees, too, one reason I was very conscious of the stairs at Ikebukuro Station. My medication of choice is naproxen (brand name Alleve in the U.S.), which is available only by prescription in Japan, as I found out when the supply I had brought from home ran out. However, buffered aspirin and ibuprofen are readily available.
