New JR station 「高輪ゲートウェイ」/ “Takanawa Gateway”
JR East will open new station between Shinagawa and Tamachi in 2020. Was announced that the name of the new station will be「高輪ゲートウェイ」("Takanawa Geetowei" or Takanawa Gateway).
JR East has asked public input for the name of the new station. Most popular was 「高輪」(Takanawa), which is name of the area west of the station. Second popular was 「芝浦」(Shibaura) and third was 「芝浜」(Shibahama). JR East took most popular choice Takanawa and added "Gateway" because according to JR East it is close to Haneda Airport and also Shinagawa will be terminal station for new Linear Shinkansen. |
There are reports on Twitter that they added Gateway to Takanawa as it will be the name of a big commercial development that JR East is heading up.

I saw on the news that Takanawa Gateway was 130th in JR East’s public poll of potential station names. Makes you wonder why they bothered...

Takanawa was the No. 1 choice of people, with 8,398 entries, while Takanawa Gateway placed 130th with 36 entries. JR East decided to name the new station as Takanawa Gateway as it is expected to become a major transportation hub, given its close location to Tokyo's Haneda airport as well as Shinagawa Station, where a new maglev train line is scheduled to open in 2027. |
Tennozu Isle, Tokyo Teleport, Shinagawa Seaside...
I guess this is in keeping with the English naming theme in that area of Tokyo. |
I was interested to read that it's the first new station on Yamanote-sen since 1971. I live in Kansai, so don't have a feel for Tokyo things so much, but that was a surprise to me.

One of my fellow translators posted a cartoon on Facebook in which "trendy" katakana names were added to all the Yamanote Stations, including Yurakucho Almost Ginza, Sugamo Grandmothers, Otsuka Toyoko inn, Shimbashi Salaryman Sanctuary, and Tabata Nothing.

That is in trend on twitter. I liked Sugamo one.
Otsuka one is funny because it has I believe two Toyoko Inn within one minute walk of each other, or was it three now. Then there's Yurakucho dig, but Uguisudani should be called "Uguisudani Adult Town" instead?! And finally, everyone's favorite, Tabata. |
Why is Gotanda sexual place? Actually Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya should all be named Sexual Place. |
