Long-term luggage storage in Tokyo?

I'll be on a sabbatical in the second half of this year. Will be in Tokyo during the first week of August, and then spending 6 weeks in Japan from mid-Oct to early Dec. In between, I'll be all over SE Asia. These two parts of the trip clearly call for different attire, and I'd like to avoid hauling my fall outfits all over the tropics for two months. I'd like to bring a cold-weather suitcase that stays in Tokyo from Aug-Oct, and a hot weather suitcase that stays in Tokyo Oct-Dec. I assume that hotels wouldn't be super excited to hold my luggage that long, and that there's a time limit for the NRT storage options (the website doesn't address this specifically, except for lockers, which have an 8 day maximum). Any advice?

Good morning, I live in Japan and there are several options for your storage needs. Sometimes there are luggage storage counters which will store your bags at the airport for a nominal fee per day. The lockers do have a maximum number of time for locker use, as you mentioned.

There are also some companies that offer luggage delivery services. I use them when I fly to Tokyo and need to get back to my home in Kobe but do not want to deal with my luggage. Perhaps they offer some sort of long term storage option as well.

Here's a link with more information. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2274.html

Enjoy Japan!

1) If you're spending those six weeks at a school or some other organization (or if you're planning to spend the entire six weeks at the same hotel or rental apartment) ask them for a solution - If it's a hotel or a rental apartment that you're asking, you could offer to pay them for the storage, since it's clearly above and beyond what a hotel would normally do for free.

I'll be all over Japan during the six weeks. I'll email the Grand Hyatt (where I'm staying in Aug, mid Oct, and late Nov), but as you say, clearly, this is above and beyond what I'd expect of a hotel. I can't find any reference to a maximum storage period on the NRT website, so that might be a possible (and very convenient) option, too. Thanks for the advice!

The one operated by GPA has a 30 day limit. (Terminal 1.)
預かり日を含めて最大30日まで

I didn't see anything noted for NPF at T2.

I'd directly contact the concierge at Grand Hyatt. Although I personally don't use concierge much, concierge at some Tokyo hotels (probably GH included) really go above and beyond. It would not surprise me if they work hard to find some type of solution for you.

Looks as storage services at airports and train stations usually have maximum of few week or so storage limit. There are few storage companies which will store items from few weeks to few months starting from a small box. I think you are looking for a service like that. One I saw online works with overnight carrier and pick up items from your location and deliver items to specified location. However, I did not see English version and looked as all is done on Japanese. Unless you are fluent enough in Japanese to able to navigate Japanese websites or able to speak Japanese with native speakers without help, my suggestions is to ask and get help from the hotel you will be staying at Tokyo.

Longterm luggage storage services in Tokyo

I'm receiving these sort of questions all the time from my Airbnb guests and decided to put together this information for long term luggage storage in my city. Use TEBURA (service avalaible in and outside of Tokyo) or Rail-go-service (avaialble at Tokyo station), these are probably the first option to consider. Safe travel everyone!

I've been looking for a cost efficient > 10 day luggage storage option in Tokyo and came across a "Day Warehouse" service https://www.day-soko.gr.jp/ It seems to require a little more pre-planning and some Japanese language ability (or healthy trust in Google Translate) but a 140 size box up to 20kg can be stored for 21 JPY per day + 21 JPY deposit fee + 21 JPY work fee. There's also a courier service to drop off and pick up or you can visit the warehouse in Tatsumi in person during business hours.
Price List https://www.day-soko.gr.jp/prices/li...c20(Membership
"qualification)Article 2 Members shall qualify as having the following items.(1) Address and phone number in Japan where we can contact directly.(2) E-mail address of the person who can send and receive e-mails.(3) Available in Japan, valid credit card."

For 7-10 days, a post dated luggage delivery is probably more efficient and convenient as there are a lot of Takkyubin and Post Offices in Tokyo.
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japa...e-kix-hnd.html
Tokyo-Tokyo JP YuPack for size 140 is 1750 JPY with up to 10 day post-dated delivery https://www.post.japanpost.jp/servic...ran/13_en.html
Kanto-Kanto Yamato Takkyubin for size 140 is 1814 JPY with up to 7 day post-dated delivery TA-Q-BIN Rates Table: Table for All Regions | Living in Japan | YAMATO TRANSPORT

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japa...e-kix-hnd.html notes some business hotels are less willing to hold onto luggage between visits.

JP Post is working with Ecbo Cloak to offer overnight storage at specific JP Post offices. Drop off and Pick-up is 11:00 - 16:00 M-F and 9:00 - 19:00 All days at the larger post offices (Tokyo-chuo and Shinjuku) at 600 JPY for a suitcase. This might be an option for people who are traveling by Shinkansen.

HND airport offers luggage storage for up to 2 weeks and coin lockers, probably up to 7 days

From the sounds of it - the best way would be to ask your hotel conciege to hook you up with a storage room service. There are plenty of long term self storage solutions available in Japan and this sounds like it would be the way to go if you intend to store more than 2 - 3 weeks.

Question Service for short-term visitors

Bumping because this seems it could work for persons attending Hokkai-Do in April 2019: Flying to TYO, obtaining artifacts there, but not needing to bring them to Sapporo; retrieving them when rebounding to Tokyo, and off to the home country.
