Drive around Nagano/Nagoya

Drive around Nagano/Nagoya
Hello,
we are thinking of going back to Japan, our 4th time, early October. We are 2 adults and a 5 year old. We drove once from Takasaki and around the area. We found driving in Japan very easy. We now are thinking to pick up the car outside Tokyo and drive to Kanazawa, Nagoya, Nagano and in the area. We know the train is fantastic but feel a bit stuck once at destination.
I have a few questions:
- would we be wise to do that or cost of toll is ridiculous and over the price of train passes (7days)
-where are good spots to stop/stay in this area?
-will we struggle with city parking and are we best to park outside and train in?
