No more Japanese made Gorgonzola cheese

Last week EU and Japan have agreed on Economic Partnership Agreement. Under the agreement only cheese made in Italy in certain region and certain process will be allowed to be called Gorgonzola cheese. There are many cheese makers in Japan currently make gorgonzola cheese, but 7 years after this agreement goes into effect, all those Japanese cheese makers can no longer call their cheese Gorgonzola cheese. Under the agreement expression such as “Gorgonzola like cheese” or “Gorgonzola type cheese” are also prohibited.

As for parmesan cheese, in Japan it is typically sold in powered grated form and called Kona Cheese (粉チーズ), where the agreement indicates in Japan it is known as different from parmesan cheese from Europe hence phrase “parmesan cheese” will be allowed by Japanese cheese manufacturer.

Gorgonzola cheese no, but parmesan cheese yes…???

Looks like Gorgonzola cheese is a kind of blue cheese? Maybe there's special meaning and traditions/trademarks?

Same as Scotch whisky from Scotland only.

Calling it "cheese" was stretching it to begin with. Japan is a wonderland of many culinary treasures. Cheese however... is not one of them.

There's some excellent artisanal cheese coming out of Hokkaido these days. It's not as cheap as I might like, but it's well made.

That will confuse the daylights out of the regulators.

This problem has regularly stumped the Japanese sushi regulatory bodies as they really can't be called "food" either.

Better would be to protect names such as Kobe Beef or Wagyu.
