Thanks ksandness - good to know that Japan post has worked reliably for you! I've heard good things about Japan Post, I'll have to see who handles Japan post in Singapore. I've had to many negative experiences with Singpost for parcel and registered post I'd rather not go through them if I don't have to.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions of alternatives - I know and am aware of these other services, but I'm asking specifically about this class of service because I'd like to know how it works and so how I might be able to use it should the need arise. There's no need to bore folks with some of the specific nuances of my personal travel arrangements that would make this a very handy option.
