Golden Week in Tokyo 2014

Hello,

At the time when I booked my flights I wasn't aware that the final part of my Japan trip will be during the Golden Week - I arrive to Tokyo on 29 April and depart on 3 May.

Just wondering if there's anything I should know about it? Like are the shops closed on 29 April and 3 May (the last day of my Japan trip, always convenient for final shopping?)

If everything is closed, what shall we do instead?

Apart from a usual visit of places we love in Tokyo, we considered a visit to Yokohama, maybe Kamakura (if we don't get templed-out before that) or Nikko for day trips. Would this be anyhow affected by the holiday?

Thanks!

I'm glad you posted this question - I am also going to be in Japan during Golden Week this year, though I knew that when I bought my ticket. The tickets were so much cheaper that week than any other time in April/May (when I wanted to go), and most of the stuff I read online seemed to say that it wasn't that bad, just that transportation would be crowded and accommodation would fill up quickly, so they should be booked in advance. Hopefully no one will have any nightmarish tales of traveling during Golden Week. :)

I think Japan Guide probably has it right with regard to the peak days for travel and the direction of travel on those days:

Unlike the New Year holiday, I don't think that many things that a visitor would use would be closed during Golden Week holidays. If anything, more things will be open, as things like museums that are closed on one set day per week normally have a rule "Closed every <x>day, except when it falls on a national holiday, in which case closed on the following day." As others have said, the problem will be more that everything will be very busy and crowded: long-distance trains, hotels, and tourist attractions.
