Where to eat/buy beef in Fukuoka, Nagasaki or Saga
I was slightly distressed that we would miss Osaka/Kobe on our upcoming Japan trip, and not have a high-end beef meal there. That was until I realised that our destination of Northern Kyushu is the origin of Saga beef...!
Now the question is where to go? We have a night in Fukuoka, followed by a night in Nagasaki, then Kurokawa Onsen (ryokan meal included). We are travelling by car and will thus directly pass by Saga.
Our second question is how easily could we find beef in a local supermarket, and would these markets offer the possibility of vacuum-packing a slab of meat for flying home in our luggage?

Nissin World Delicatessen in Azabu-Juban where I buy most of my meat. They have a lot of halal meat, but it's all imported. I often buy NZ tenderloin that is halal. I have even seen a whole lamb in the freezer section. But the Wagyu is not halal.

p.s. Regarding the link from Kyushuguy, purchasing a block of 2 kilo Wagyu for 20,000 yen is pretty good value. The basic domestic (prefecture not specified) black Wagyu (黒和牛)fillet sold in the supermarket is about 900something yen for 100 g. It's sold in annoyingly small pieces. The most expensive Wagyu goes for about 4000/ 100 g. At Nissin they have Wagyu tenderloin for 1500 and another type for closer to 3000.

Saga worked out perfectly for lunch as we were making our way from Nagasaki to Kurokawa onsen.
Loved Kyushu. Will definitely be back for more driving and beef!
