Japan Rail Pass

I'm looking to buy my Japan Rail Pass for my upcoming trip in February, any idea who the best travel agency is for purchasing the pass? I've found these two so far and did a little searching on the forums, but haven't found much information on specific agencies...

http://www.japan-rail-pass.com --> $303
http://www.jtbusa.com/en/jr/j-all-1.asp --> $325

Any idea on if both of these companies are equal, if so I'll obviously opt for the cheaper of the two. Or any other recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Uh... Japan Railway Group is their supplier.

www.japan-rail-pass.com = 30 rue Sainte Anne 75 001 Paris France OR Jodoji Shimominamida-cho 173-1 Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8404 Japan

Based in both Paris and Kyoto, Japan Experience aims to be Europe's leading specialist in travel in Japan, ..."

Setting aside how business is conducted the French way (google search the company "Japan Experience"), you would be looking at foreign currency credit card surcharges to start with (if you are USA based).

Here are the links to the places where JR Passes are sold on the various continents.

When I followed the link for North America, I was delighted to find that there is an authorized agency right here in Minneapolis.

I can't believe how often we have to ask this but - where are you located? It makes a difference.

With shipping fees and credit card fees you're probably looking at a difference of $5 or so. With that in mind, I'd use JTB. It's a long-established, and well-known firm - Japan's largest travel agency. If something were to go wrong, you have a domestic phone number to call and a trustworthy outfit to deal with.

Ok, um, I was going to recommend TTA, which is what I always use but JTB works too.

The cost of the rail pass is so much cheaper than buying on the spot so don't worry about saving 20 bucks here and there. Your first couple of Shink rides will cover the rail pass cost.

I just love the Shink, especially if I buy a bent before boarding!

In reality, you have to do the fare comparison before buying the railp, a few shorter shink trips could be substantially cheaper than a pass.

Dragging this up from a long time ago but www.japan-rail-pass.com don't charge any transaction fees or FedEx delivery fees if you order 2 passes and they charge in USD so no fees from your bank either.
I have bought from here and recommend them a lot!

Some banks do charge foreign transaction fee if the transaction is conducted outside of USA, even though the currency is USD. Maybe this (French and Japanese) outfit has another unpublished address in the USA for credit card charges, I don't know.
