I think the Hilton, the Park Hyatt, the Grand Hyatt, and MO are all great properties, and they all fit your requirements. Even though it is in Roppongi, (which is not great for kids), I would go with the Grand Hyatt as it is central and is a good base for exploring the city. Just my two cents.

Grand Hyatt wouldn't be bad. It also has indoor subway access (though the Hibiya Line is not as convenient to tourist stuff) and there are many things to do within walking distance (movie theater, museums, all kinds of restaurants). The only downside is that Roppongi has a considerably sleazy element, as extensively discussed in other threads on this forum. However, it isn't all that bad until the hours when your kid ought to be in bed anyway, so that may not be an issue.

Note that Roppongi is way off of any of the intercity rail lines, so it would be a bad base if you plan day trips outside Tokyo.

No way, I'd definitely recommend Shanjuku!

Funny isn't it: The space within the "castle walls" of Roppongi Hills is actually a very decent environment to wander with an eight year old. It has an interesting (some say confusing) layout, full of chic boutiques, restaurants and no road traffic. You're right to point out that things get quite sketchy at night in the less salubrious areas of Roppongi, but it's possible to steer clear of that.

In the same part of town, the Tokyo Midtown development, which houses the Ritz Carlton, is less castle-like than Roppongi Hills, but equally "sanitized". Like Roppongi Hills, it has vast areas of pedestrianized walkways, some garden space, and lots of high end shopping and dining.

It is not my first choice, but the few times I stayed there I had good experiences.
