ryokan with view of mt fuji?
i will be in japan beginning of april and am trying to book 1 night in a ryokan with a view of mt fuji, anybody have any suggestions? going to splurge on the hotel that 1 night, so money is (almost) no object, just looking for something nice with an en-suite bath, view of mt fuji, and dinner in the room. Has anybody stayed anywhere they can suggest? thanks!

I wish you all the best of luck.
I am pretty sensitive to this subject because I have tried thus far 4 times to see Mt. Fuji. Tried spring, fall twice and winter and have never even seen the mountain. Last time in November, never even got to go up to past the first level. Right in Hakone, there are many good places however you are still not guaranteed to see Mt. Fuji. I am going to try one more time in early March to prove to myself that Mt Fuji exists and that it is not a figment of everybody's imagination. |

I am assuming you couldn't see it because of the weather? Is it that bad there? i'm going beginning of april, hopefully i can see it as the rooms with views of it are EXPENSIVE. I've read the best time is early morning
And yes, best time is early morning. In Winter, if it isn't cloudy or raining (say 1 out of 5 days), you will see it. In April, you'll have to contend with some haze already, plus much higher likelihood of rain. In summer it is all haze and/or rain all the time. |
well that's going to suck if i paid 500+ for a room and don't have a view of mt fuji

Any time the humidity is high (most of the year), your chances of seeing Mt. Fuji are slim. Between that and the air pollution, the mountain rarely shows it face.
On my last trip, which was in early November 2007, I went to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building's 45th floor observation deck, and I still couldn't see it. I've had the best luck in December and January. Presumably the ryokan you are looking at is in either Hakone or the Five Lakes area. In that case, you'll have pleasant scenery with or without what my fellow foreign students used to call "the Fooj," and a lot of plants will be in bloom. A high-end ryokan in a non-urban area is a memorable experience with or without Fuji. |

Go there with the idea of relaxing in a wonderful ryokan and if you get to see the mountain, it was a super bonus. |

Oddly enough, I've had pretty good luck seeing Mt. Fuji without planning for it. Every Japanese friend I have tells me I'm unusually lucky seeing the mountain so many times. |
Something positive to think about.
In April there are supposedly strong winds blowing so at times the winds blow hard and you get a great view of the mountain. Another plus to going in April is the cherry blossoms. My wife (she is Japanese) tells me that in April they have these winds that blow the cherry blossoms into the air and it looks like a white out of blossoms. I don't know personally, I've tried to see it and failed each time but I hope your try is successful. |
