Both flights had originally been 2 class B787-8 Skysuite planes - which my current Monday departing (just) JL41 still is.
They must be alternating the aircraft on this route (ETA, I think CPH-Flyer nails it in post #80)

I already booked on ANA after the swap and based on advice here, but I was just perusing and noticed that they did indeed swap it back to a 787 with APEX suites. 44J 789.

A new video on YouTube announcing the A350 as the new flagship, but still no photos or footage of cabins:

hoping this means we’ll at least get schedules soon. Hoping to use AS miles to book either HND-JFK in November or JFK-HND in December; don’t want to end up on the 777 flight, assuming both aren’t switched at the same time.

They will only have 2 by the start of the winter schedule. So they certainly can't cover both the 4/3 rotation and the 6/5 rotation. From an airframe utilisation perspective it would be more efficient to cycle through both rotations, but it could seem that JAL will only do JL6/5 so initially probably not even all days will have A350-1000.

That is kind of known, that October 29th JL6/5 is expected to be the new cabin, question is really the rest of the season. As they don't really have enough frames to fly every day. But a good spot on the surcharge, that might give an indication, if they did not just load it every day for the winter season.

I wonder if this will also be applied to award bookings?

If it goes under carrier imposed surcharges, and you book through a program that pass them on to the passenger, then yes. AA does not pass those on.

What is the most likely outcome in the following scenario? I book an F flight today for summer 24 using Asia Miles. Currently showing as a 773 then it changes to the A350-1000. What happens to my booking? Will they come back and try to impose the surcharge? Cancel my booking? downgrade me? something else?

Is the surcharge only on Oct 29 or is it every day from that point onward? I can see why the inaugural flight would have a surcharge, since it will be extremely popular and swarmed with avgeeks, vloggers, YouTubers, and journalists. But a continuing $1,000 surcharge for the new cabin after that seems ridiculous. I would rather just fly ANA for less money and then try the JAL A350 after the hoopla dies down and the surcharge disappears.

I believe the wording states as of October 29. I take it to mean all flights on the new A350 will have this surcharge for F seats.

Since the surcharge is already announced, if you book now it will be applied. If Asia Miles charge the carrier imposed surcharges.

Right now when I go through the process it would only cost me the miles needed plus $210 in fees and taxes.

Would also have a long layover in Tokyo. About 18 hours on this route. I guessI would at least have time to explore Tokyo somewhat.

18 hours in Tokyo is a delight. Not applying this ridic surcharge to awards is the right way to go I suppose. Milking those to whom $1k makes no difference?
