Is it possible to have the baggage through-checked when flying on a domestic flight the evening before the international flight the next morning, both JL?

JL website only mentions same-day transfer.

My understanding is that you'd need to reclaim luggage and check it in the following day for the international flight. But as I always originate in Tokyo, my actual experience is non-existent.

Thank you very much, CPH-Flyer.

That was what I was expecting too, but to my surprise they did check my bags through for the flight the next morning without any quibble even though it was on a separate ticket (cash followed by award).

Interesting, I guess they can just ship it over to the holding pens in the international terminal and all will be fine.

Separate ticket is never an issue for JAL. They still have that as a written benefit on tickets within Oneworld. And it seems to generally work wider than that.

I'm assuming this would not work in reverse, right? We are flying on an award BOS-NRT in April, but no onward flights were available when I initially booked it.

I am looking at booking a NRT-ITM flight separately (we would have about 2h15 between flights). Since we'd be entering Japan at NRT I assume we'd need to collect our luggage for customs and re-check it?

Always; whether one or two tickets you'd need to reclaim the luggage at Narita. But JAL will be able to tag the luggage to the final destination even if on two tickets, if your domestic flight is on JAL.

Oh, good to know. I'm sure having the luggage tagged and boarding passes in hand would at least save a bit of time.

Marginally, but yes a bit of a time saving.

Just flew JAL intl-HND-domestic and need to issue domestic tickets at T1 HND and re-check all luggage. So I think you need to specifically ask to tag the luggage to the final destination.

I have an overnight connection (<24 hrs) coming up next month, intl arrival, intl departure.. but need to have my bag for the overnight portion.
It sounds like the option to short check is always available.. just need to request at check-in?
Does JAL gives the option or does JAL has specific rules for each situation?

I doubt JAL will short check your bag. Airlines are generally quite allergic to that. Under 24 hours, I would expect you only to see your bag at the final destination.

Fingers crossed!

Update: JAL confirmed via email that short-check is possible for my overnight connection, just need to request at check-in.
