ZIPair eyeing NRT-Honolulu and Portland

Article in Japanese

I'm surprised PDX-NRT wouldn't be flow by parent JAL instead. Would ZIPair passengers still be allowed to connect to JAL Alaska partner AS at PDX?

The JAL and Portland rumours have been as consistent as the rumours of the death of the Delta route. Neither has materialised yet.

If Zip takes the PDX route, I guess JAL are not seeing a great yield potential in the route.

Orlando is also probably on the short-list as JL and ZIP is talking to GOAA for a future route via NRT.

I guess that is a more obvious Zip route that JAL route, as it would be fairly heavy leisure oriented. Would be quite interesting if Orlando hot a JAL group flight before Miami.

Zipair currently doesn't have any inter line agreements in place. On the miles side, AS has been quite content not to have partnerships with wholly owned subsidiaries of their partners (see Dragon Air & CX).

DL is switching PDX to HND, so there's an "opportunity" to NRT, although without feed at either end, perhaps not much of one.

On the other hand, maybe a more Y focus and lower cost can make it a more profitable route than with traditional international JAL service.
