Award Ticket Issue

Hello All,

I purchased 2 award ticket for my parents using JAL miles before the devaluation took place. They were flying out from SKT-DOH-MEL on Qatar Airways. Unfortunately SKT airport was closed by the government of Pakistan because of on going conflict with India. So I called Qatar Airways & they told me since the ticket is issued by JAL, I should call them. I am based in USA so I called JAL center in Japan because the flight was departing in 48 hours. After speaking to the supervisor she told me I would need cancel the tickets & find award availability again. Qatar has no availability for my routing... so I cancelled the tickets & booked on Emirates where I had to pay extra miles since the devalue + surcharges.

So my question is what are my options if something like this happens?

OLD flights ( SKT-DOH-MEL & AKL-DOH-SKT) in J 200K JAL miles + 550$ in tax
New Reservation ( LHE-DXB-AKL & MEL-DXB-LHE) in J 260K JAL miles + 1500 tax & surcharge

You should check your travel insurance. It is unlikely to cover tickets purchased for others and less likely to cover force majeure (closure of the airport), especially when ordered by the government.

A sad situation where there is nothing much you can get for recourse.
Travel insurance would have helped with offsetting costs to get alternative tickets out of Pakistan.
