SKYTRAX 5-Star Certification and 2018 Best Economy Seat Award

JAL Group - PRESS RELEASES - Japan Airlines Certified as 5-Star Airline at SKYTRAX Awards Ceremony

I guess now NH will need to stop advertising itself as Japan's only 5* carrier (or will need to add a remark with tiny font saying this is true as of 16 Jul 2018). Or they can say they are Japan's FIRST 5* carrier

But I still think SKYTRAX Is SKYTRASH

Or now we know why JAL keeps devaluing JMB every year. They need to write a big fat check to Skytrax to get the 5th *

SkyTrash I agree , but I must say that JL definitely deserves that award (whatever it costed them ), especially when NH is up there...

NH is definitely not better than JL in my opinion...

Not even sure why this website is still alive, you don't even know how they evaluate anything

By just seeing Lufthansa and Hainan on that top 10 list = not creditable.

Finally JAL got up to 5*, on par with NH.

Though as said before, the evaluation system is seriously unreliable, as no standards to compare.

I just flew NH outbound, JL return on TPAC. Both Y.

NH's 9-abreast 787 is just terrible. I was looking forward to JL's 8-abreast Y seating, but surprisingly I did not feel like there was much difference.
JL's seat seems to recline further, which is good and bad.

I see. Makes sense, as I think every seat had IFE box underneath which I thought was archaic. Yeah the pitch actually felt a bit tighter on JL than NH... probably had to do with NH's 787 having slimline seats. Also my JL plane had footrests that I felt were horribly misplaced and rendered essentially unusable... either that or mine was broken and didn't lower as much as it should've. I'd love to try the one that won the award and see how much better that one is. But I'm primarily a Star A guy.

Anyways, it's not the pitch that's the main problem for me with these aircrafts. It's the width.
NH's 9-abreast 787's are terrible.
With JL being 8-abreast, you would think that there's a potential for each seat being almost 2" wider than NH's. But I felt there was hardly any difference in seat width between JL and NH 787's. On the other hand, JL's aisles were substantially wider as I had no issues bumping my rollerboard. And I think JL's armrest was a bit wider. Those are sort of wasted spaces (I don't use armrest). If JL could incorporate the same teeny aisles and armrests as NH, the seat width could be substantially roomier on JL's 2-4-2 config (vs NH's 3-3-3).

JALPak only mentioned pitch in his reply, but the Sky Wider seats also has increased width like that. 787 Sky Wider is 48cm per JAL.
