Even IF CA/pilot unions do strike, according to history, it will only affect domestic operations and it will be a short one. And the strike will be announced in advance. I won't loss any sleep at this point.

Thanks for the link. You should have at least provided your source in the first place (even just the name of paper/tv channel) when you post something like this.

Looks like they have started the voting to authorize a strike according to the latest report. Voting ends on Monday. But I am still optimistic about this. (Although the strike might work in my favor and will let me change my travel dates :p) The last planned strike was canceled at the end and other ones only last a short period of time and only affect domestic flights.

To be honest, it's stupid for them to strike. It will be very hard for them to win any public support. Enough steps have been taken by JAL before they resort to layoff. And if they do strike, they are wasting taxpayers' money.

ETIC warns the unions about the strike too: http://e.nikkei.com/e/fr/tnks/Nni20101118D17JFA18.htm

OT: It is JALPak not JAL PAK. At least get my name right. ;)

Again, this is simply vote to give the unions the rights to strike to increase their bargaining power. It doesn't mean the unions will strike. It simply gives them the option IF it is approved.

JAL reaches basic accord with banks on new loans

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Struggling Japan Airlines Corp. on Friday reached a basic agreement with its major creditor banks on new loans of 284.9 billion yen, moving another step toward reconstruction as it undergoes court-administered rehabilitation, sources familiar with the matter said.

...

JAL will repay all 319.2 billion yen in existing debt in line with the plan submitted to the court in late August with its bankruptcy administrator, the state-run Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp. of Japan.
