I have no trouble getting seats on the KIX-BKK-KIX flights, but ticket prices are insane so TG and NH and SQ and CX it is for now :p

JAL foresees 19 bil. yen revenue fall as discount shareholder fares end

This press report is just SO FUNNY. Clearly there will be a salvo of communiqués from JAL until the final restructuration plan is announced.
Note how loudly JAL complains of the transport ministry's decision to discontinue the shareholders' discount. Then ventures some wild guess about the induced loss. This is so funny. And so unprofessional.

I was thinking maybe they'd actually make money since people are actually paying full fare...... Geeze what a novel concept JAL.... Seriously I am at the point where I am laughing anytime I see a JAL financial story in the news. You can't take them seriously anymore.....

You do know these aren't official press releases or words from JAL right? They are just "leaks" and "rumors"

Well, yes, but by raw passenger count, Southwest is the world's largest airline and Ryanair is the largest European airline (LOL).

As most industry watchers will agree, revenue passenger miles/kilometers is generally considered the best measure of airline size. I wonder how JAL and ANA stack up in terms of RPMs?

The smart solution: Grupo Mexicana suspends all flights until further notice

* Grupo Mexicana suspends flights until further notice
* Current management received the company in a state of technical bankruptcy seven days ago after it filed for protection under Mexico’s insolvency laws
* Financial deterioration and lack of agreements force Grupo Mexicana to stop flying
* Grupo Mexicana deeply regrets any inconvenience caused to passengers

Mexico City, August 27, 2010. Nuevo Grupo Aeronáutico, S.A. de C.V. ("Grupo Mexicana") announced this morning that as a result of the group’s delicate financial situation when it changed owners a week ago, compounded by failure to reach agreements that would allow for the capitalization of its three airlines, Mexicana Airlines, MexicanaClick and MexicanaLink flights will suspend operations until further notice as of midday (12:00 p.m.) on Saturday, August 28, 2010.

Among the factors that have contributed to this announcement are:

1. Grupo Mexicana’s fragile financial situation, which has deteriorated further over the last four weeks due to the previous management’s decision to suspend ticket sales, forcing the company to continue operating in the interests of passengers without receiving any revenue.
2. No substantial agreements were reached to give companies in the Group long-term viability.
3. Lack of effectiveness in the insolvency (Concurso Mercantil) process intended to protect additional financial resources available to the company so it could to continue operating.
4. Given the uncertainty of the situation, certain suppliers have begun demanding advanced payment of services that are essential to the airlines’ operations.

At least in Mexico they are finally(!) - and notwithstanding the incredulous and halfhearted management decisions of the last couple of weeks - willing to let Schumpeter do his work, in order to recreate a national airline industry that is a lot more efficient and competitive.

JAL will submit the restructuring plan on Tuesday (Japan Time), expect court approval by November. Details will be announced in the press conference held on the same day.

Also PM Kan has given his approval of the plan

Hope it goes into the cost cutting needed to return JAL to a stronger carrier.

ANA had about 57.5 billion RPKs in FYE March 2009, and JAL had 83.5 -- so yes, a considerable difference. JAL's international operation is about twice as "big" in terms of the number of seats sold.

Passenger numbers for the same period were 49.1 million and 52.9 million respectively.
