Newbie question...calculating miles

Hi, folks. I've not had any success searching for this.

Is there a good place that gives a tutorial for how to calculate miles? To be more specific, I'll be flying Nagoya-Narita-Chicago (ORD) round trip and would like to see how many miles that is. I know that I have E-and H-fare tickets, which will give me 70% FOPs <plus the times two bonus in the current promotion><plus the 400 mile bonus>, but don't know where to find the base miles. I guess I just don't know where to look.

TIA,

Kento

Try the great circle mapper.

That's a pretty cool page. How close are the miles on there to the numbers used by JAL, I wonder.

Thanks for the link, ckpeter.

I can't speak for JAL but my experience with most airlines is that they use mileage numbers that are very close to the ones generated by the Great Circle Mapper.

Oops, I forgot that I'm also going from ORD to CLT. According to the 'circle mapper', that's a total of 7085 miles.

7085 x 70% = 4959.5 x 2 (promotion) = 9919 FOPs each way. Oh, plus the 400 bonus points = 10319 FOPs.

Is that right? Also, do I get the 400 bonus on the way home, too?

Thanks,

Kento

JAL Domestic sector table: http://www.jal.co.jp/en/jalmile/jdsmt.html
JAL International sector table: http://www.jal.co.jp/en/jalmile/jismt.html

If your NGO-NRT flight is one of those international flights, you won't earn 2x FOPs because it's not a domestic flight.

Domestic sectors as part of the international itinerary should earn 100% miles.
For

http://www.jal.co.jp/en/jalmile/flight/jal.html

※For Japan domestic flight sectors included in international tickets, Yokoso (welcome) Japan Airpass and Welcome to Japan Fares, mileage will be credited as 150% for First Class, 110% for Class J and 100% for regular seat regardless of the accumulation level given above.
For your CLT flight, it is not a Japan domestic flight, so you won't earn 2x FOPs and I am not sure if you will earn the 400 FOPs bonus either as it is an AA operated fight. But I have never travelled on a JL coded AA operated flight before so I could be wrong...

For partner flights, you can use this calculator: https://www121.jal.co.jp/JmbWeb/JR/SectionMile_en.do

Thanks for the info, but it still seems ridiculously complicated.

It's not that complicated When you book the ticket on JAL website (Japan), it shows you the number of miles you get. So no need to do any calculation for number of miles.

Only FOPs is a bit complicated. But nothing an excel spreadsheet can't solve

You should earn the 400 bonus points for your ORD-CLT flight just as long as it has a JL flight number.

Also keep in mind that you get the 400 bonus points per segment. So, to use my usual trip as an example, DEN-LAX-NRT-MNL and return would earn an extra 2400 bonus points.

Isn't that's the same link I posted

And it isn't a real calculator. It only tell you the sector miles, not the number of miles you will get. The real calculator can be found on JAL Japan website (Japanese version). Click on the number of miles and it will break down the number of miles and you can enter whatever status/JALCard you have. It will add the bonus miles there too.
