Jal nrt-hkg

We are on JAL J from NRT to HKG, a 6:35 pm departure. Despite this being a 5hr+ international flight, their web site indicates the old foot rest style seats. I have also read JAL's site for meals and other services but am inquiring whether anyone has recently made this flight and how they evaluate the in-flight services?
Am I correct re: the seats?

JL NRT-HKG

I'm afraid it's correct, if your equipment is a 767 or those short-haul/leisure market 744. The 744 on this route are the one that "packs everyone in," with only Y and J (no shell), and maximum seating (Y upper deck).

I just booked a ticket for travel in two week, booked this Tuesday for HKG-NRT as a 744 (10:30AM flight), changed to 767 yesterday!!!

They announced the change some time ago. 767-300ER will be used on JL735/736 regularly. But on special occasions, e.g. Chinese New Year or when the flight load is really good, JAL will switch to 744. I will miss the 744 upper deck. My last JL736 flight is probably my last (JAL) 744 flight

Why do you think that JL has lost so much market share on these long flights to Asia/OZ? Getting these three-generation-old Biz seats is a disgrace. OK, sometimes it is a lottery, but who want to take the risk? To HKG, from the time you sit down at boarding to the time you get off, it is well over 5 hours.

I was on 736/735 recently, in Dec/Jan, and both flights were operated by a 744, I guess because it was peak season--both flights were full in J and Y. On the outbound (or inbound I guess) 736 HKG-NRT the 744 we were on had F in the nose, J till about Door 3 on the main deck and Y everywhere else (incl. upper deck). On the way back NRT-HKG we got a plane with J in the nose till Door 2 and the rest was Y.

flying time

is listed as 5 hrs 5 min...that doesn't include boarding nor taxiing,etc.

My impression is that the seats will be rather crummy for this level and
length.

Still hoping someone can comment on recent on board service.

Actually it has taken into account of taxiing. What exactly you want to know about the in-flight service?

Here is the Jan menu in Japanese with pictures (2 western 1 japanese choices)

Actually those crummy seats are superior to the CX inter-asia crummy seats and pitch on the cx333!

Thanks for the info. The photo of the trays tells me a lot in conjunction with web site descriptions. I guess I am simply and naively surprised at the seats.
We had originally been non stop on CX in J from JFK-HKG. We changed our tix to fly AA F to NRT and then onward. Live with your decision!!

Will JAL's change in alliances effect these award tix do you think?

An issued ticket should be honored and JAL isn't going to switch immediately if it decides to go to ST. It will take time for system changes and regulatory approvals. Rumor is that they won't switch until April 2011. Issued tickets should be good even after that but you might not be able to change your reservation after that though.

Is JAL F avialable? I would rather fly on JL005/006 to NRT if the JAL Suite is available. Also if you don't mind staying for a night at Tokyo, JL 731/732 has F service but it will be the old sky sleeper seats.

Good question. Does JL still offer F between NRT and HKG and back?
