Yes! Drive up the Rhine and stop in at the wineries and wonderful restaruants and inns along the way.

Thanks sounds good, how's the train rides and boat trips on the Rhine. Are they worth it for the weekend seeing as I'll have two of them. I figure I'll try the drive after arriving on the 7th.

I'm not sure about boats or trains there. I've only driven. But I expect if you poke around on the web for a while you'll find something.

Confirm stimpy - but it's a great area to kill a few brain cells! Car rental prices in Germany are pretty reasonable too! Don't know the cost of a dsignated driver- I went with with wife!

By the way Frankfurt has quite a few places to be enjoyed in the evening as well- but again most involve killing many brain cells! They make great Alt beer and I think the stark beer is due out soon!

Have fun! Wish I was there!

Thanks for the input Stimpy and Doc it sounds like the brain cells will just have to suffer for a few weeks. Beer it is with some driving up the Rhine for a weekend. Mucho Gracias

If you don't feel like driving, I strongly consider the DB (German National Railways). Fares are reasonable and Frankfurt is a major rail hub for them.

It's not too difficult to read a German train schedule -- you should be OK with a limited knowledge of German.

If you hit the wineries and the many breweries a word of caution: German DUI laws are VERY strict. The Polizei does not administer breathalyzer tests but upon suspicion of DUI will take you to a nearby hospital (by force if necessary) to administer a blood test for alcohol content.

Recommend driving and maybe going up Mosel a little ways. Best time for this is when small villages have wine festivals and entertainment. At this time police are somewhat forgiving too! Boats stop, but maybe not at what you really want to see. If you want water time, cross on a ferry.

Thanks for the input, I'll check out all the options and I'm sure I'll have a blast.
