Recommend Rome Tours

My sister and I will be in Rome for 5 1/2 days in mid Oct. I am looking for any recommendations for an day tour to give us an overview. Then, we can do other sites on our own.

Thanks.

Through Eternity (www.througheternity.com) and Context Rome (contextrome.com) do great jobs. They both offer group and private tours.

I like the walking tours in the guide books. As I recall, there are some in Lonely Planet and in Rick Steves. Probably in others too. Set your own pace, stop when you want, skip things you aren't interested in, maybe only do part of one one day and finish the next... You don't miss hearing something because you are at the outer edge of a big group and a loud truck goes by.

You need to be a reasonably good map reader, and it helps to have company so you can take turns doing the reading and mapping.

I do remember the ones I've done better than many of the guided tours.

You probably can take a look at them at your local library, although if you are in a tiny town you might have to order them in from elsewhere.
