Rome in August???? Are we Nuts

Wanted to go in Sept but when we found free tkts the Hotel we wanted wasnt available, when the hotel was available no free tkts when we needed them.

So we are thinking about Aug!? Funny both the hotel and free tkts are to be had, is it like unbearable in Aug?

We want to do 4 days in PRG and then onto FCO. So we can be in Rome either 8/17-8/21 or 8/24-8/28 , flight back to NY is better on 8/21 as its at 2pm while the flight on 8/28 is at 10am, which means getting out of the Hotel bright and early.

part of the problem is The Hilton Cavalieri as of 9/1 is suppose to become a Waldorf Collection Hotel of Hilton so thats a Cat7 and no AXON (4 nights for 125k instead of 160k) will beable to be used. Sure we can book for after 9/1 and still use the AXON now but Sept and Oct doesnt work. After 9/1 it will either 60k or 80k per night I believe but I most certainly can be wrong about the amount, now as a Cat6 its 40k a night. (when I said Sept/Oct doesnt work, I mean when the Hotel is available we arent and when its not available we are).

So any insight as to what we should expect weather wise will be greatly appreicated.

PS sorry for the long story, but I tried to anticipate people posting what do U mean its not available , I see availability etc etc

I have spent many summers in Rome.
Prague is a toss up. Could be nice or could have a heat wave. who knows.
Rome on the other hand is consistently hot and humid in the summer.
I think Rome is an amazing city any time of the year.
Recommendations:

Do most of the walking earlier in the morning or in the evening/night.
Hotel must have air condition (which yours has)
Would be nice to have a pool to cool off in the afternoon.
Plan on taking taxis if you need to criss cross the city.
Maybe spend half a day at the beach. Still hot but breezier.
Would spend some time in the Borghese Park. Lots of trees with great shade.
Bring sunscreen protection and a hat.
If the travelers have medical problems, check with your doctor. Older travelers should be more careful about dehydration. They may not sense dehydration as well as younger people.
And yes, tap water in Rome is arguably the best in the world but in restaurants you get a dirty look when you ask for tap water. "We serve only bottled water"....

Are you crazy? Definitely not.
Enjoy

We went to Rome two years ago in August. For months prior to our trip I kept hearing people ask in disbelief that we were going to Italy and Spain in August. Well, I live in Washington, DC and the weather here in August is hot and humid. The weather in Italy and Spain was much more comfortable then DC in August.

As far as "Europe closes in August", don't believe it. We had a great time in Rome and in fact we stayed at the Rome Hilton Cav and it is an amazing hotel.

i read the title and was thinking the same thing of my trip to europe in august. spain, italy, germany, france and london. I have never been in Europe in the summer time so didnt know what to expect. thanks for the info.

The Hilton is located out of the city center so it should a tad cooler there. There is a free shuttle to Piazza Barberini. The location isn't ideal for sightseeing but it is hard to pass up a free room. Be sure to watch out for add-on charges. If breakfast isn't included don't eat at the Hilton. This hotel has a pool but the charges are steep.

Rome will be open and full of tourists in August. Some restaurants will be closed for holidays but there are so many restaurants in Rome that it won't effect your trip.

I think the problem with Italy in the summer is the fact that the only people in the cities are the tourists. The heat is manageable, it's just that the culture makes it feel a bit Disney-ish

Thanks but..

I am & have been Diamond for a number of yrs now, but this might be my last.:(

Any how we wanted 9/7-9/11 seems theres some type of special event gonna be taking place and no Overrides allowed. That was the only week that we could make it in Sept or Oct

Well, there won't be many italiani around - most of Europe will be at the beaches in August.

There will be other FT-ers there though who are equally nuts ;)

I've been to Rome throughout the year, and have enjoyed it each and every time. It's a different experience at different times of the year, and it would be hard to compare one against the others.

My personal choice would be not to go to Rome in August if it's your only time visiting there, and without the oppurtunity to return for a second trip.
It depends, I guess, on whether you like to have the 'local' experience - eating where the locals do, and attempting the language - or a more touristy experience which it would be in August.
