You'll want to add Italian gas prices to your calculations its about $8.00/US a gallon right now and I doubt it will drop in price between now and next summer..

It's only a 2.5 hr train ride, it will go by very quickly, especially with the beautiful countryside.

www.trenitalia.it shows that you can leave Venezia at 10:50 am and get to Firenze Santa Maria Novella at 13:21 on the Eurostar.

Ask your concierge to make train reservations if you can!

In August you would definitely want to reserve a few days/weeks in advance. If you do so early enough you can probably snag "Amica" fares which are discounted by about 20% off the regular ticket price, you can also look for family fares. The trenitalia website has an English language option for more information.
