Touring Rome

One late afternoon in middle of July 2021 (very hot), we did the 9-Piazzas tour with a Brazilian Architect (Pedro Senna) who lives in Rome and considers it along with its history & architecture as the school of his dreams. The informative tour explains history of 2 millennials of Rome through these 9 piazzas. The 3km walking tour not only leads you through 9 Roman squares but also their surrounding monuments, Baroque Churches and Palaces:

1. Piazza della Repubblica
2. Piazza di San Bernardo
3. Piazza Barberini
4. Piazza del Quirinale
5. Piazza di Trevi
6. Piazza di Pietra
7. Piazza di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola
8. Piazza della Rotonda (Pantheon)
9. Piazza Navona

Pedro opened my eyes as to what happened to Rome for a millennium between 400 AD - 1400 AD through his historical narrative of the 9 Piazzas. Great educational yet fun tour that is highly recommended to whoever want to understand Roman history and architecture.

One very interesting area of Rome ignored by most travelers due to unfamiliarity or lack of time is the Foro Boario. This area with its immediate vicinity is located in the rione of Ripa. Foro Boario was the cattle market of ancient Rome and the site of the original docks of Rome (Portus Tiberinus). Boarium experienced intense commercial activity and in the 3rd century BC was the site of the first gladiatorial combat in Rome. The site also houses Republican temples built during the second century B.C., and are in very good condition due to the fact that during the Medieval era they were consecrated as Christian churches for their protection. If you start your walk from Ponte Palatino, you will encounter some fascinating Roman antiquities and early Christian churches:

- Temple of Hercules Victor
- Temple of Portunus or Tempio di Portuno (manly fortunes)
- Fountain of the Tritons
- Santa Maria in Cosmedin which include the famous Bocca della Verità
- Palazzo Dei Crescenzi
- Arch of Janus
- Basilica of San Giorgio in Velabro & Arcus Argentariorum

Visited on 8/13/2021 and spent an entire afternoon and early evening exploring this fun neighborhood. You may combine this with exploring the Circo Massimo, and/or the nearby Aventine Hill – highly recommended especially if you have a knowledgeable guide.

If you are at a hotel with a concierge, I would suggest that would be a good option
