FCO (Rome) connecting flight from U.S. to SUF (Lamezia Terme)

The question is... Do we have enough time to make the connection AND is there enough time for our baggage to make the connecting flight?

We would very much appreciate if someone who has recently experienced a connecting flight in Rome (FCO) originating in the United States, with final destination in Italy can help allay some fear we have about an upcoming trip. The specifics are as follows:
(1) The trip is in September.
(2) We each have a checked bag and each have a carry-on bag plus personal item; flying economy.
(3) We have US passports.
(4) Flight originates on American Airlines (AA) in Philadelphia (PHL), non-stop to Rome (FCO), arriving around 9:15am. We believe this will likely arrive at Terminal 3, Gate E31-E44.
(5) We have a connecting flight on Alitalia (AZ) to Lamezia Terme (SUF) which leaves about 11:00am. We believe this will likely depart from Terminal 1, one of the B gates.
(6) The flights are all on one itinerary or "ticket". We believe that our luggage should be checked through to Lamezia Terme.
(7) Our flight times (booked in May) were changed the other day such that our original layover of 2h20m is now only about 1h45m.
Due to this shortened layover, we are now concerned that we might not have enough time for the connection. We have read much online, some of it a few years old, and a couple more recent posts, but can't get a really good feel for what to expect once we arrive in Rome, and how likely this connection will be (and how stressful). Once we step off of the plane, we fear we might be corralled somewhere we shouldn't be going, because that is where the crowd may go. We understand there is apparently some way to stay "AIRSIDE", but we don't quite understand how and where we do this.
We believe we will have to go through passport control as a non-Schengen country of origin, and then perhaps to the gate to check-in. Or maybe to the ticket counter?? We searched for Terminal maps at FCO and just can't find detailed enough ones that indicate where we should be going. We are also unsure what to do with our carry-on bags, and if they will be held to an apparent strict 8KG limit we just learned that Alitalia imposes. Do they actually re-weight the bag (we confirmed the bag size is within limits)? And will there still be room overhead for our carry-on if we get do manage to make the flight, which will undoubtedly be cutting it close at best?
We checked into the possibility of securing a later flight from FCO to SUF, and there is one at 1:20pm, but it will cost us a change fee and additional fare, for a total of about $800 US! It's really crazy, and we just don't know what to do. Our main goals are to reach our destination at SUF that day, even if a couple hours late, and to not have to contend with lost baggage, since we will be traveling around a lot (eventually entering Sicily) and heading back to the airport to collect our missing luggage is not something we care to deal with, if possible.
On the return home flights, we will be leaving Catania (CTA) on Alitalia, arriving at FCO about 8:20am and then connecting to American Airlines around 11:10am - so a layover of 2h50m. I am hoping that this won't be as challenging, but maybe someone has thoughts about this, too.
If anyone is able to "walk us through" this process, including where to navigate so we don't make any wrong turns that will cost us time, and let us know if we have a decent chance of making this connection, we would be most grateful, as I suspect many others might be, as well.
Thank you in advance for your time and insights!

There's something very, very wrong with this post: no way I can see it, as if it had miraculously disppeared; which explains why there are no answers nor reads
