Taxi Strike in Rome on 21 Nov?
 

Does anyone have any info on a possible taxi strike in Rome on 21 Nov? Do these types of things cripple the city?

I think the answer is YES, there is a planned taxi strike on Nov 21. The WIKI in the following post has a link to the planned strikes.

I was in Rome in February and there was a taxi strike. I did not know about it in advance so it was a bit of a hassle getting to my hotel. The train to Termini was easy but taking my bags on the local bus was a hassle.

Once I was at my hotel, things were fine although the absence of taxis was noticeable. I was able to walk and take public transit in the city without a problem. Everything was seemingly normal other than the lack of taxis.

Hopefully Perche or someone else with more knowledge will chime in.

Instead of using the "fast" train to Termini, consider the low, cheaper one and use one of the alternative stations that are well served with public transportation such as Trastevere, Ostiense, Tiburtina and a few more. That depends on where one's hotel is. For example, from Trastevere you hop on the tram (using the same ticket) that brings you directly to "Argentina", a 5 min. walk to the Pantheon. One should know the location of the hotel, of course, and have researched the public transport stop closest to it (bus, metro, tram). All required info available through the Internet, your friend and helper in such situations! :)

Yes, it's another anti-Uber strike, about the government letting them get away with anything they want, while taxi drivers have to obey a lot of rules. It's more than Rome.The anti-Uber demonstration will include Milano, Torino, Genova, Bologna, Firenze, Bari, Napoli and Roma. It's still easy to get to and from the airport, because that train never goes on strike. You just have to do some walking, or take the train or bus. Nothing essential is eliminated unless other unions decide the join in, and the trains and buses go down too. This is actually a strike called for November 7th that was postponed, and none of the other transportation sectors joined the taxis, so it should just be them.

Thank you. Odd to have a strike about Uber--isn't Uber all but shut down in Italy? Seems like that was what I was reading in other threads...

Uber exists in Italy as Uber Black, the fancy car service. I took one in September when the taxis vanished and rode in a nice Jag with a guy who admitted that he and his partner were not sure if the Uber thing was going to work for them or not.

The common form of Uber is banned. Uber Black exists in some cities. It’s the one where the driver has to have a license, insurance, have the vehicle inspected, and go through a semi-background check. It’s quite a bit more expensive than a taxi or a car service. Your right, it’s not likely to last. I think all forms of Uber were just banned in London due to lack of corporate responsibility. I would be surprised if Uber drivers will act as scabs and drive in Rome during a strike against them

I believe that they just got banned from Quebec, Canada, because they wanted drivers to go through 35 hours of training just like a taxi driver, and to have the cars inspected yearly, and they refused that and all other things drivers have to do, like require background checks on drivers because it would result in. "onerous obligations."
