Gondola Sharing

People often imagine gliding down the canals of Venice in a gondola, especially in the evening, but they often balk when they hear the cost. I haven't don't it in a long while, but I think that during the day it's 80 euros for 40 minutes, and 120 for one hour. At night it's 100 euros for 40 minutes, and 150 for an hour.

There's a new gondola sharing service that people are speaking pretty well of, although it's not something I'm going to use. It's called KiShare. It was started by two gondoliere, and it is fully authorized, and has expanded to include water taxis, and even land taxis in the Lido.

You sign in and post that you want to take a gondola ride on a specific date around a certain time. Other people who have the app respond. It's described as a cross between WhatApp, TripAdvisor, Tinder, and Uber. You correspond with the people you think might be a good fit, and when you have created your group and have an agreement on time and place, the app will book the gondola.

A gondola price is the same if it is one or six people. If two couples share a one hour evening gondola ride, they will be paying 75 euros per couple. If three couples, it's 50 euros per couple.

This might not fit everyone's image of how they want their gondola ride to be, but for some, it may be the only way to experience a gondola ride.

It has received positive write ups in the press:

The article mentions, "Since opening just over a month ago, over 5,000 people have signed up just by word of mouth." And, "The reviews say it's simple and easy to use." And from one of the two owners, "It's not by chance that other cities have already contacted us to form partnerships, including taxis in Milan and Bologna, and snowmobile rental places in Cortina.'

I have attended two weddings in Venice as a guest. The bride and groom were both Venetian. After the ceremony, the couple entered the flower-bedecked gondola. I was told that the only time a Venetian man rides in a gondola is on his wedding day.
