Do-It-Yourself Pompeii and Herculaneum

Where can I find an audio guide of Pompeii and Herculaneum that I can download to my Nokia Lumia 635 Smartphone? I will be visiting these sites next month without a tour guide, and I need all the help I can get to navigate them alone.

Not a guide, but I had this BBC doc bookmarked, and I would think it coud aid your appreciation for Herculaneum:

BBC - Life and Death in Herculaneum ( Prof. Wallace-Hadrill )

Thanks for this, but watching it could spoil my trip. Maybe when I get back. :)

Online I've found this list:

Pompei un giorno nel passato
Pompei Touch
Eros Pompeii
Pompei Maps and Walk
Pompei App
Visita Guidata di Pompei
Pompei Offline Map Travel Guide
Pompei Filmcards
iPompei
Le Lune di Pompei
Napoli Pompei Capri City guide

http://www.campuspompei.it/2015/02/2...-di-fruizione/

Browse them all till you find something.
Not all are in english.

If nothing suits you, I would go the good old way: book and reading. After all I suspect little has changed there in the last 2000 years :)

There's a very nice, new museum (well, new: it wasn't there the first time I visited in 1990; it was there four years ago ;)) at Ercolano and I seem to remember that at the biglietteria one could get on of those audio guides for the scavi too. But I'm not 100% certain...

I don' think he has Pompeii and Herculaneum, though. It's more major cities (London, Paris, Rome, Venice, etc.).

Thanks. I will check it out.

Question: How do I purchase train tickets for the following itinerary?

- Naples to Pompeii
- Pompeii to Herculaneum
- Herculaneum back to Naples

Do I simply purchase a r/t ticket from Naples to Pompeii, and stop at Herculaneum on the way back for free, or must I purchase 3 separate tickets?
Can I purchase an unlimited ticket?
Where do I purchase these tickets from?

No website has been able to clarify this crucial information for me, so I'm very confused.

FYI: I will be visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day

Start by going to the station of the Circumvesuviana, on the right of the Naples main station. Buy your ticket to Pompei Scavi (€3.20) there. After visiting Pompei/Ercolano, at the respective station buy your ticket to Ercolano (€2.20) and Napoli (2.50). Before boarding trains, stamp your tickets (valid 1 hour IIRC). Simplicissimo!

PS At the Circumvesuviana station you could ask whether they have full-day tickets, but I doubt as no such thing is mentioned anywhere.

PS2 Woe, both places in one day: get with you with some high energy food (e.g. chocolate bars), water and good, light shoes!!!

Steves has a tour Pompeii for certain. I used it. It took about 2 to 2.5 hours, and doesn't go down to the Amphitheatre. The download itself is maybe 40 minutes. You can find the accompanying map in his guidebook or online.

No need to purchase in advance regional trains ticket, but if you want:

Are you certain one can buy tickets for the Circumvesuviana using the Trenitalia (Frecce) site? I recognizes neither Pompei Scavi nor Ercolano as a valid station!

No, you're right. Circum definitely not online.
That is to main Pompeii station, about 1km from the site.
Just an option to keep in mind.

Thanks.

Just to clarify: I will first purchase a O/W ticket to Pompeii Scavi at the Porta Nolana train station in Naples. Then, before I leave the Pompeii Scavi station, I will purchase a O/W ticket to Herculaneum (Ercolano Scavi). Finally, before I leave the Ercolano Scavi train station, I will purchase a O/W ticket back to Naples Garibaldi or Porta Nolana station.

Am I right?

Will I be purchasing these tickets from a ticket vendor or from a machine (like in the metro)?
