cost of snow chains in Italy
I am renting for a week or so soon: I was considering whether to donate to the rental company, or to buy a set.
I have seen some posters commenting they had seen a set for EUR 35 or so on the Italian roads - I thought this would be the cost for a single chain, and I'd have to get four of those.... Would be glad to know if a set for 4 wheels would cost EUR 35 or closer to EUR 140.... Thanks D. |
35 € may be the price for a couple, not a single chain. It mostly depends on the size of the wheels and whether you really need a full set or is ok to cover up only the wheels with traction.

two or four wheels
Thanks for the reply.
Good point, I tried looking up whether the law points to 2 or 4 wheels - could not find any mention.... I am just looking to avoid a fine - will be on the highway to Aosta and then static inside the town, no side roads etc.... D. |
Buying snow chains in Italy - ANSWERS
SO to answer my own question...
I landed at Milan in March, determined to but some snowchains to avoid the high cost of rental. I knew I would not need to use them and that their purpose was only to avoid a fine if stopped by police (in Aosta). I tried 3 different supermarkets in Milan - zip. Some signs were up but shelves were empty - perhaps as in March winter supply sales were over ? I found some in a DIY superstore, but not in my tire size. They seemed expensive as well - 50 Euros or so. With no other choice I rented snowchains, and received a rusty, well-used inferior set of chains. I finally found some chains in a supermarket in Aosta, suitable for a wide range of tire sizes, for about 36 Euros. D. |
