Top 5 things to see & do in Italy

My wife and I are going to Europe this summer, and a good portion of our trip will be spent in Italy. We depart Munich on July 11, and have a room at the Hotel Danieli booked in Venice for 3 nights, checking out on July 14. We were thinking of heading straight to Rome until we return to the US out of Rome on July 22.

Would you suggest spending the entire week in Rome, making a couple of day trips potentially? With the amount of time we have, are we missing any must-see's?

In closing, if you could please list your Top 5 Things to See & Do in Italy, I'd appreciate the ideas!

Thanks.

You could easily and happily spend a full week in Rome, especially if you throw in day trips to Pompeii and a hilltown (or two) in Tuscany or Umbria. Trains make these excursions easy to do on your own, or you could hire a car & driver.

I'd have an easier time giving you a top 50 list rather than a top 5. With 11 days, includng three in Venice, you'll definitely be missing some "must sees." But that is good reason to go back again -- and again.

slawecki - I'm staying at the Danieli with SPG points. Would you suggest staying at the Westin Europa & Regina instead?

the question is who will give you the better room on points. both point stays at E&R got us canal view. our 3 or 4 stays at danieli got us nice rooms in the bowels of the hotel. the danieli gives nicer daily gifts.(i was even a platinum back then) all stays were in feb, before carnivale, so not high season.
