There is rail line A which goes to the central station and several buses.

I've only ever driven it via personal auto but I've never heard complaints.

Trains in Sicily are not comparable to those in northern Italy, and most Sicilians take the bus instead.
Your hotel should be able to tell you which bus to take - definitely DO NOT try and use a taxi in Palermo.
