Help In Venice

I am currently on a cruise (Princess,in Rhodes right now) which will dock in Venice on 11/06. I have an early morning flight (8:00 a.m.). The airport is not far, but the cruise ship is telling us that there are no taxis (water or otherwise) until after 8:00 a.m.

Therefore we need to purchase a "transfer " at $59 per person in order to get to the airport. This doesn't sound right. Does anyone have any experince with this? If so, please advise.

Thanks!

Try this site which has a journey planner for the vaporetti: http://www.actv.it/english/home.php

When in Venice last year I stayed near St Mark's Square. From the airport I took a private water taxi because I'd just missed the public vaporetto and there wasn't another for an hour.

It was good fun whizzing along the canal with wind in hair feeling a bit like a movie star, but it was 90 Euros, so definitely not cheap. I took the public vaporetto back to the airport which was much cheaper but I think it took an hour or more. It was mid afternoon so can't help you re early morning service.

certainly there are water taxis available, but as 17thousandkm says they will cost around €100 - good value if there's six of you, not so good if there's two [but worth the money]

I thought that you might be able to use the alilaguna public boat transport, but checking the timetable that's what doesn't run until after 8am.

Cheapest way is probably a water taxi or vaparetto (check timetable in 17kkm's post) to Piazzale Roma and then public bus from there (have a look here for some good info.

The cruise line is either misinformed or is not being honest w/you. Taxis (water and land) in Venice run 24/7.

8am is not an early morning flight out of VCE. we usually end up on something before 7am. water taxi run day and night. since i presume you are not familiar with venice. find 5 others, and share a water taxi. i have not heard of the taxi raising the fee for additional luggage or passengers, but they do have the right to do that.

the trip takes about 30 min.

the airport has excellent inexpensive espresso and decent pastries.

the trip takes about 30 min.

do not use porter services at the airport. very expensive.

Given the amt of luggage usually assoc. w/cruise pax - I would expect a party of 6 to have to pay a bit extra; but you are absolutely correct that the water taxi is well worth it.

what about the bus?

There's only been one mention of the bus from Piazzale Roma to the airport. It takes about 30 mins and is way cheaper than the water taxi.

Agreed - the bus is absolutely the cheapest option.

Until we hear back from the OP re: (a) how much luggage is involved and (b) where the ship will be docked (presumably Tronchetto) it is difficult to know if Piazzale Roma is an option or not.

It's about €2 (IIRC there are two different bus companies, prices differ slightly).
