Waitlisted despite having confirmed ticket

Waitlisted despite having confirmed ticket
I have a rather odd situation:
ITA cancelled a flight I was meant to be catching. They rebooked me several days ago on to another flight for both the outbound and inbound legs. This was all done a few days before departure and confirmed ticket received.
Now Ive gone to check in for the return leg and am being told I have been waitlisted! The website says I should just go to the airport and see if I ca. secure a seat
I REALLY need to get home on the flight I have booked.
Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated (and how on earth can they waitlist someone with a confirmed booking?!)

Very simple explanation : the flight they have rebooked you on is overbooked. I recommend you to go to the airport early.
