When I was there a few days ago they told me that currently the closing for renovations is planned for after Chinese new year 2021.

Thanks, can't help but think the owner of this hotel is a bit stupid unless they are milking the hotel for all it's worth now as they believe Hong Kong is going to basically collapse next year. They should really have brought the renovation date forward once the protests started to drag on to try to minimize lost revenue, not pushed them back yet again until half way through 2021.

Like most plans, sounds great on paper but not workable.

The NY and LNY is the highest revenue days for IC-HK due to all the harbourview rooms and the firework displays. We did a fireworks party about 10 years ago and the suite rented for 50,000HKD with another 30,000 in f and b commitment.
The original plan was closing after LNY 2019, then 2020 and now 2021.

You can't just close the place and call in a crew like getting a taxi. The contractor has to have their trades committed and ready, supplies ordered and delivery scheduled.

There is a very high demand for construction crew in HK at the present time. The delay might not be an option for the hotel.

Once the hotel is renovated it will become a Regent with no Ambassador benefits. And for those guests who “frequent the intercontinental” will not go as it does not count towards consideration for RA status

I'm not saying they should have closed overnight once the protests started! I suppose I didn't consider the extent of the concentration to a single night but I still can't help but feel they should have started planning to close after CNY 2020 instead (which no doubt will have revenues massively down on previous years also if lots of Chinese tourists have been put off by the current situation).

At the present time, since about 10 years ago, all construction and renovation schedules are at the mercy of the contractor.

Do you have the exact date on when the hotel will close for renovation?

So will the Regent recognize any sort of elite status from IHG?

It seems they don't have a fixed date yet. Also with this years NY fireworks cancelled (fear of protests, just read the South China Morning Post) there seems to be a lot of uncertainity for the future of Hong Kong and such a reluctance of commitments more than a year out.

I was planning to watch the NY fireworks at the hotel but need new plans now as fireworks are cancelled for the second time in a row. I think it’s more of a strategy to put the blame on the movement so they loose support of the public. Bad for the hotel to kill two of the biggest nights

the Club level is worth it for the service and Champagne (Moet?)

the wines served are better than most ICs in Asia as they spend +/- USD 15 a bottle rather than maybe $8

it seems they rotate the wines but I have never been wow-ed by any wine I drank there

Jacquart, thankfully no Moet. The other IC has Moet.
